A TASTE FOR CREATIVITY.
Mike Muema is a Kenyan producer, DJ, sound engineer, educator, and multidisciplinary creative whose work sits at the intersection of electronic music, Afro-house, sound design, and contemporary African club culture. Based in Nairobi, he has become an important figure within Kenya’s alternative and electronic music ecosystem through a career that spans music production, education, live performance, sound engineering, event curation, and creative direction. Known for his atmospheric productions and rhythmic experimentation, Muema’s work reflects a deep commitment to sonic exploration and the growth of East Africa’s contemporary electronic music scene.
Often referring to himself as the “Musical Chef,” Muema’s identity reflects the blending of multiple creative disciplines. Alongside his work in music, he is also a professionally trained chef, a duality that has shaped both his personal brand and artistic philosophy. Much like cooking, his production style is rooted in layering textures, balancing rhythm and emotion, and carefully crafting immersive experiences. This sensibility carries through his music, where Afro-house grooves, electronic soundscapes, deep basslines, and organic African rhythmic influences merge into rich, emotionally resonant compositions.
A largely self-taught producer, Muema began developing his sound through experimentation and online learning, building his technical skills independently before emerging within Nairobi’s growing electronic underground. His early breakthrough came after Kenyan band Masa discovered his remix work online and reached out to collaborate, helping introduce his production style to a wider audience. From there, he gradually established himself as both a respected producer and a highly adaptable sound engineer capable of moving between commercial, underground, and experimental spaces.
Over the years, Muema has worked across multiple electronic subgenres including Afro-house, deep house, future house, and alternative electronic music, while maintaining a distinctly Kenyan sonic identity. His productions often balance dancefloor energy with introspective listening experiences, creating music that feels equally suited to clubs, festivals, headphones, and immersive cultural spaces.
His collaborations span a broad spectrum of Nairobi’s creative community. He has worked with artists such as Fena Gitu, contributing production and remix work on tracks connected to her Love Art Lust era, including Let Me Go and Love Is. He also created a notable reimagining of Just A Band’s iconic song Ha-He through his 3 Step Remix, introducing a contemporary electronic interpretation of one of Kenya’s most influential alternative records. Through these collaborations, Muema has consistently contributed to the modernisation and reinterpretation of Kenyan music within electronic contexts.
Within Nairobi’s DJ culture, Mike Muema is recognised for sets that move fluidly between Afro-house, deep grooves, soulful electronic textures, and experimental club rhythms. His performances often emphasise mood-building and storytelling rather than straightforward peak-time club formulas, allowing audiences to experience electronic music as both communal and emotional. He has appeared at clubs, cultural festivals, creative gatherings, and underground electronic showcases across Nairobi, helping strengthen the visibility of African electronic music within local nightlife and cultural spaces.
Beyond performance and production, Muema has played a significant role in shaping the educational side of Kenya’s electronic music ecosystem. He has served as a faculty member and tutor at institutions such as the Africa Digital Media Institute (ADMI) and the Santuri Electronic Music Academy (SEMA), where he has trained emerging producers, DJs, and sound professionals in music technology, production, and audio engineering. His involvement in these spaces reflects his commitment to building sustainable creative infrastructure and knowledge-sharing within East Africa’s growing electronic music movement.
His technical expertise also extends into large-scale production and sound engineering. In 2018, Muema joined Coke Studio Africa as a mix and master engineer, working alongside respected engineers and producers including Jaaz Odongo and Sean Peevers. This role placed him within one of Africa’s most visible music production platforms, contributing to the final sound and polish of collaborative projects involving artists from across the continent.
Outside traditional music spaces, Muema has built a parallel career in sound design, advertising audio, and creative content production. He has developed jingles, sonic branding, and campaign audio for agencies, media houses, and brands, applying his understanding of rhythm, atmosphere, and emotional storytelling beyond commercial music releases. This versatility has allowed him to navigate multiple industries while maintaining strong roots within Nairobi’s independent music scene.
As an event curator and creative organiser, Muema has also contributed to the development of Nairobi’s nightlife and cultural programming spaces. Through roles connected to Afrotribe Events and other creative initiatives, he has participated in talent scouting, playlist curation, artist development, and the creation of community-centred music experiences that bridge electronic music, visual culture, and contemporary African identity.
Recent projects such as HOMEGROUND and his forthcoming album HEAL continue to reflect his evolving approach to music-making — one rooted in healing, emotional resonance, experimentation, and cultural hybridity. Across his body of work, Mike Muema represents a generation of Kenyan electronic creatives reshaping African electronic music from within, combining technical mastery with a deeply personal and locally grounded artistic perspective.
