Suraj is a Nairobi-based electronic music producer and DJ widely recognised as one of the key figures shaping East Africa’s Afro-electronic and Afro-house landscape. His sound is rooted in the fusion of traditional African rhythms, instruments, and vocal elements with contemporary electronic production, creating immersive sets that are both deeply cultural and globally resonant.
Originally from Kisumu, Suraj’s musical journey began with classical training in tabla and percussion, laying a rhythmic foundation that continues to define his work. Before fully committing to music, he was also a member of Kenya’s national table tennis team, a detail that reflects the discipline and focus he brings into his creative practice. His early experiences DJing in unconventional spaces, including Hindu temples, shaped his understanding of music as both a communal and spiritual experience.
His breakout moment came with early productions like Wawere, where he began integrating Dholuo language and traditional influences into electronic formats, establishing a signature sound that would later define his career. Over time, he has refined this approach into a distinctive blend of Afro-deep house and tribal house, positioning himself at the forefront of a genre that continues to gain global recognition.
Beyond his work as a DJ and producer, Suraj is also a cultural builder. He is the co-founder of Gondwana, one of Nairobi’s most influential electronic music platforms, which has grown into a major event series bringing together thousands of people and connecting local audiences to global electronic music culture. Through initiatives such as Midi Minds and his ongoing collaborations, he actively contributes to the development of the scene by mentoring emerging DJs and fostering cross-genre experimentation.
His performances span major festivals and venues across Africa and internationally, including appearances at Nyege Nyege, Blankets & Wine, and stages in cities such as Berlin, Budapest, and Dubai. Whether in a club setting or an open-air festival, his sets are known for their layered textures, percussive depth, and ability to create a shared, immersive experience.
Within Nairobi’s music ecosystem, Suraj represents more than an artist. He is a connector, a curator, and a driving force behind the growth of electronic music culture in the region. His work continues to bridge local identity with global sound, positioning him as a defining figure in the evolution of Africa’s contemporary electronic movement.
