BLOWING HEARTS AND MINDS
Samuel Sichangi is a Kenyan producer, DJ, sound engineer, and multidisciplinary creative whose work has become deeply embedded within the evolution of Nairobi’s contemporary alternative music scene. As a founding member of the influential EA Wave collective, Sichangi has played a major role in shaping the “Nu Nairobi” sound — a movement that fused experimental electronic production, alternative R&B, hip-hop, soul, and Afro-fusion into a distinctly modern East African sonic identity. Across production, songwriting, live performance, and collaborative work, he has built a reputation as one of the key architects behind Kenya’s contemporary alternative music movement.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Sichangi developed his artistic identity through an instinctive approach to music-making rooted in experimentation and emotional honesty. His sound draws heavily from 90s hip-hop, alternative R&B, soul, electronic music, and future-facing African production styles, often blending atmospheric textures with vulnerable songwriting and layered melodic arrangements. Rather than conforming to mainstream expectations, his work consistently pushes toward introspection, mood, and sonic exploration.
As a solo artist, Sichangi’s catalog reflects a deeply personal and emotionally driven approach to music. His 2021 album Soundtrack to a Heartbreak stands as one of his defining projects, bringing together a wide network of collaborators from Nairobi’s alternative scene while exploring themes of vulnerability, emotional conflict, intimacy, grief, and self-reflection. The project featured artists such as Karun, Xenia Manasseh, Lisa Oduor-Noah, Xtatic, and Steph Kapela, highlighting both his collaborative spirit and his central role within Kenya’s evolving alternative music ecosystem.
Earlier releases such as The Project Greatness and Hold On further established his identity as an artist interested in emotional storytelling and genre-fluid production. Tracks like Aura featuring Karun and Jean Deaux, Switch with Xenia Manasseh and Steph Kapela, and Low Blows featuring Xtatic demonstrate his ability to create music that feels intimate yet sonically expansive — balancing soulful songwriting with experimental textures and modern electronic production.
Beyond his solo work, Sichangi’s influence as a producer has arguably had an even broader impact on the Kenyan music landscape. Through EA Wave — the pioneering producer collective that includes creatives such as Ukweli, Jinku, Hiribae, and Nu Fvnk — he helped establish a collaborative ecosystem that redefined Nairobi’s alternative sound during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Together, the collective became known for crafting genre-bending music that blurred the lines between R&B, electronic music, Afro-fusion, hip-hop, and experimental soul.
His production credits span a wide range of influential East African artists. He has worked extensively with Karun, producing tracks such as Glow Up, True To Me, and Make Believe, while also collaborating with artists including Show Dem Camp, Blinky Bill, Taio Tripper, Mankind, Steph Kapela, Lisa Oduor-Noah, and Xenia Manasseh. His work often emphasises atmosphere, emotional resonance, and layered sonic textures rather than formulaic commercial production, helping shape the sonic identity of Nairobi’s alternative generation.
Sichangi is also recognised for his live performance work and DJ culture contributions. As a DJ and live electronic performer, he is known for highly eclectic sets that move fluidly between future bass, house, hip-hop, trap, electronic soul, and Afro-influenced club music. His performances often blur the distinction between DJing and live production, emphasising improvisation, live manipulation, and immersive sound design.
One of his notable live collaborations has been the Nairobi Laptop Orchestra, an experimental live electronic project developed alongside Blinky Bill. The project focused on live digital manipulation, collaborative performance, and pushing the boundaries of electronic performance within East Africa’s creative scene. Through these performances, Sichangi helped introduce audiences to a more experimental and technologically driven side of Nairobi’s music culture.
Internationally, Sichangi’s work received major recognition when he was selected as an alumnus of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in 2018. During his time at RBMA, he collaborated with global artists and producers while further developing his understanding of production, sound experimentation, and live performance. The experience expanded his creative network internationally and reinforced his position as one of East Africa’s most forward-thinking music producers.
Within Nairobi’s club and creative scenes, Sichangi has remained a consistent presence through performances at Red Bull Music Academy events, Kenya Nights showcases, and EA Wave live experiences. His role within these spaces extends beyond performance alone; he represents a generation of African producers reshaping ideas around collaboration, genre, and creative independence.
What ultimately defines Samuel Sichangi’s contribution is his commitment to experimentation and emotional authenticity. Whether producing records, performing live electronic sets, collaborating through EA Wave, or building alternative sonic worlds through his own projects, his work consistently expands the possibilities of what contemporary Kenyan music can sound like. Through both his artistry and collaborative influence, he remains one of the defining creative voices within Nairobi’s modern alternative music movement.
