OPENING UP TO OTHER INFLUENCES.
Kash Kaaria, born Mukami Gitonga Kaaria, is a Kenyan Afro-pop singer, songwriter, and creative whose music blends contemporary R&B textures with African melodic sensibilities. Raised between Kenya and the UK, her work reflects a cross-cultural perspective that merges polished electronic production with emotionally grounded storytelling, resulting in a sound that feels both intimate and globally aware.
Before fully stepping into music, Kash first gained visibility through fashion and digital culture, building an audience as a fashion blogger while simultaneously developing her artistic identity behind the scenes. That visual awareness continues to shape her work today, influencing not only how she presents herself aesthetically, but also how she constructs mood, tone, and atmosphere within her music.
Her relationship with creativity began early through poetry and writing, habits encouraged by her mother during childhood. Long before recording professionally, she used poetry as a way of processing emotion and self-expression, eventually transitioning those instincts into songwriting. While attending Precious Blood High School, she formed a rock band called The Towels with friends, an experience that introduced her to performance and experimentation at an early age. Elements of those influences still appear subtly in her music today, particularly in her willingness to blend softness with edge and vulnerability with confidence.
Kash emerged more prominently within Nairobi’s contemporary music scene through releases that highlighted both her vocal control and emotional sensitivity. Her EP Strings Attached introduced her as a thoughtful songwriter capable of balancing atmospheric production with deeply personal themes. Songs such as Si Unipende featuring Ndovu Kuu demonstrated her ability to move fluidly between Afro-pop and R&B while maintaining a distinct emotional tone. Her later project ACME Vol. 1 further expanded her sonic palette, revealing an artist increasingly comfortable experimenting with texture, arrangement, and mood.
What makes Kash particularly compelling is her ability to communicate vulnerability without losing clarity or strength. Her music often explores love, identity, affirmation, and emotional complexity, carried by layered vocal arrangements and a delivery that feels conversational yet deliberate. Rather than relying on excess, she leans into restraint, allowing emotion and atmosphere to shape the listening experience.
Her influences range widely, from artists such as Beyoncé, Prince, and Lady Gaga to African voices like Asa and Yemi Alade. That range of inspiration is reflected in a sound that feels difficult to confine to one genre or scene. Whether through softer acoustic moments, electronic textures, or Afro-pop rhythms, her music consistently prioritises feeling and emotional honesty.
Over the years, Kash has continued to build her presence independently while steadily expanding her reach internationally. Her selection as Apple Music’s East African Up Next artist in 2023 marked a significant milestone, positioning her among a new generation of African artists receiving broader global recognition. At the same time, collaborations with artists from different musical backgrounds, including Maandy and Ndovu Kuu, reflect her openness to movement across genres and audiences.
Beyond music, Kash Kaaria represents a generation of East African artists navigating identity across multiple worlds. Rooted in Nairobi yet shaped by international experiences, her work exists between intimacy and ambition, softness and experimentation. As her catalogue continues to evolve, she remains part of a growing wave of African artists redefining what contemporary Afro-pop can sound and feel like on a global stage.
